That's series four for our J-Mac. |
James is certainly fast and is building on his experience but still has a few years to go before he gets to the wily old driver stage. I have watched J-Mac win but I have also watched him loose races to youthful errors. Just this year James was leading the A-main by quite a distance and with just a few laps to go he managed to get himself tangled with a lapped car which finished his night. The old hands don't make these mistakes. Though, having said that, at least that is how I saw the incident and I may be wrong but there is no denying the fact that J-Mac is a crowd favourite and great for the sport. The excitement he generates in his fans is brilliant.
So just what does it take to win a World Series Sprintcars series? Well from what I can tell.. not much. I have been trying all day to find out just how many races he has actually won this series and haven't had any luck. What determines the series is accumulated points and the way this series structure their points system there are points for everything, time trial, heats and mains are totalled to provide a nightly winner. A dumb system I think as the winner of a nights racing doesn't necessarily have to win the A-main. Of the 14 shows, one of which was rained out leaving 13 actual rounds, James only had three show/nightly wins which of course doesn't mean he only had three race wins to clinch the championship. He may well have won nine A-mains but not time-trialled well or done well in one of his two heats. This would start him mid pack in the A-main from where he could easily take the win. But the few points he had gathered through the night may not have been enough to 'win' the night. Win the A-main but don't win the night is a strange system in my eyes.
So another speedway season winds up with just a few races remaining to wrap up the local series. James, like many of the Australian drivers, heads off to the US where I see he will be running twenty six shows, That's a lot of gigs, a great experience for any young rock'n'roller. EGRC will be keeping watch on James' and other Aussie drivers progress during the US summer racing series'.
